Creating Lifelong Readers
Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) is a time during which our entire school, reads quietly for 20 minutes (9:15-9:35 a.m., Tue-Fri). Students choose their own reading materials and read independently. Most importantly, SSR allows an adult to model the habits, choices, comments, and attitudes good readers develop.
A significant number of research studies have examined sustained silent reading programs, evaluating their effectiveness with students from primary grades to graduate schoo, and most of these studies show that SSR is successful in promoting and improving student literacy [www.ascd.org].
